Laura Koenig, Flute Instructor

Laura Koenig teaches flute and music history at UAA. She received her D.M.A. from the University of Iowa as the first performer ever awarded the prestigious Iowa Fellowship. Her dissertation received both the Stanley Fellowship for Research Abroad and the Indiana University Press Award. Dr. Koenig also holds music degrees from UCLA (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and UC San Diego, and she has completed graduate study at Oxford University.

As a specialist in baroque and contemporary music, Dr. Koenig has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Australia, including the Australian Broadcasting's Young Artist Series, the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, and the National Flute Association's Annual Convention. She has taught at Knox College and the University of Iowa.

According to the Anchorage Daily News “Koenig truly has a tone most wind players would die for.” A subsequent reviewer described her playing as “exquisite, just pure and lovely every time.” Dr. Koenig has performed in the Anchorage Festival of Music, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, and as principal flute of the Anchorage Opera Orchestra and Concert Chorus Orchestra. She is also a member of the CrossSound Sinfonetta, Flutissimo, and Jomala, an ensemble devoted to new jazz compositions. In 2006, she was a guest soloist with the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra. Dr. Koenig directs the Northwind and Arctic Wind Junior Flute Choirs as well as the UAA Flute Ensemble.
