Dr. Jane Rigler
Flutist/Composer, Dr. Jane Rigler’s visit to Anchorage was a fantastic and inspirational opportunity for flutists here to learn about techniques of modern, classical improvisation and the use of electronics in improvisation.  Jane is now making her latest works available to members of the Alaska Flute Studies Center at a special discounted rate. UAA Scholarships for Seniors
 UAA has a number of tuition waiver scholarships for high school seniors wanting to major in music at UAA next fall. The University of Alaska Anchorage Music Tuition Waiver Scholarship is a two semester full-time tuition waiver, twelve (12) credits per semester, for the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. This scholarship is limited to first-time students attending the Anchorage campus and who are formally admitted into a Music degree-seeking program by the start of the Fall 2006 semester.  The application due date is May 15, 2006.  Please go to http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/scholarships/music_tw.cfm for information on the application process.

“Simply Flute”
A Class for adult flute enthusiasts. 
The better you play, the more fun you’ll have.
 
What do we do in “Simply Flute”?
Learn the shortcuts for sounding great on flute!  We will cover breathing, tone, articulation, technique and repertoire.  Students will learn/review the fundamentals of flute playing through lively, interactive activities.   They will learn the secrets of effective practicing, plus, have options for performance.  The course will include some ensemble work. 
 
Dates:                 Saturdays: May 13; 20; 27; June 3; 10; 17
Time:                  10:30 -  11:30 am
Tuition:              $125   (Alaska Flute Studies Center Members = $100)  All tuition is non-refundable.

News from Fairbanks!
The Fairbanks Flutists have been selected to perform at the National Flute Convention in Pittsburgh.  The program, entitled "Flutescapes," and will be previewed here in Fairbanks on May 21st at 8 pm in the Davis Concert Hall, UAF campus.
It is also the group's 25th anniversary (and 5 of the original members are still playing with the group!)

will include instruction for flutists as well as the Book I teacher training

David Gerry, from Canada, will be here to teach flute and give the teacher training for Book One. All students are welcome including little one who have never held a flute before.
 
Flute teachers must have completed the Every Child Can course and have submitted their audition video to the SAA for prior acceptance.
 
This is exciting, as it is the first time flute has been offered here in Fairbanks at the Institute.
 
 
Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music
Music Theory Exam
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) was established in London, England in 1889 with the aim of presenting a structured, graded music examination scheme with clear objectives and recognized standards of excellence.  The ABRSM Theory Program is a self-paced, progressive system of theory instruction in which students work through graded levels of music theory.  The final exam is offered three times annually in the United States.  It is a proctored test that is sent to the Associated Board offices in London for grading.  Students who pass their level test are awarded a certificate from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Fairbanks this Summer
The Summer Music Academy
June 17 -30 on the UAF campus, is intended for young musicians who have completed 6th through 12th grades.  Students should have played their instrument at least two years, except in the case of guitar, piano, and steel drums, where students can be beginners. Scholarships are available-the deadline to apply for those is May 1st.  Dormitory housing is available at a cost of $600 in addition to the regular tuition cost of $500.

Congratulations!
Ceylon Mitchell has received the Hedy King Robinson Award from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, London.  It is a national, monetary award for his 100% score on a music theory exam in 2005!
