My First Solo Concert by Kimberlee Kogane When my teacher first proposed the idea of performing a solo concert I kind of laughed it off, but when I realized that she was serious, I thought that maybe the idea wasn't so awful. Since I was a senior in high school and getting ready for college, I thought it through and pushed myself to accept this challenge. Once I decided that I was actually going to accept this challenge, I was informed that I had lots of planning to do. I had to choose the music and put it in a program order, I had to find an accompanist, schedule rehearsals with the accompanist, decide on a recital hall and schedule a time, and of course, practice, practice, practice. Later on, I also had to make invitations and programs, decide who I wanted to invite, and also find the appropriate attire. I didn't start getting nervous until a few weeks before the concert, when I realized what I was actually getting myself into. About a week before my concert I started having doubts about whether or not I was really ready for such a big challenge, and mainly whether I could actually pull it off successfully. I used the traditional methods to suppress the nerves, and by the time the concert came, I wasn't nervous at all. The concert went smoothly, the world didn't end, and more importantly, I had the first of many concerts under my belt. It was an accomplishment that I'm really proud of, and a memorable experience that will only make my future performances a smaller hurdle to jump. |
